William Ronald Parks JR, Japanese- and Russian-speaking world adventurer and Anglophile-American, with a lifelong interest in Asia

William Ronald Parks, known by all as “Ron”, has died aged 55 after a two and a half year battle with cancer. Although Ron certainly died before his time, nobody could accuse him of having had a boring life or not living life to the full.

Ron sometimes said that he had lived “many different lives”, and he certainly experienced far more of the world than many people can claim, having lived, amongst other countries, in the Soviet Union (prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain), Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Cambodia and Burma. His stay in the latter country was cut abruptly short when the Burmese military conducted a successful coup d’état in 2021, and Ron was forced to leave, avoiding sniper fire and military checkpoints, abandoning his apartment and all his possessions.

Special Thank You!

During Ron’s last few months, we worked together on his obituary —something that beautifully captures the many facets of his incredible life. I want to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Ross Harman at LEE&KO for your kind support in writing this beautifully crafted obituary, as well as to Nguyen Phuong Chi - Fulbright Vietnam, Sophie Ha Nguyen - Style Academy, and Tran Ngoc Anh - Elite Arts Vietnam for helping me with the Vietnamese translation.
